What is a dental scan?
A dental scan is a CT scan of your upper and/or lower jaw. The data from the scan is applied to one of two software programs designed specifically for dental implants. It is a valuable tool that guides your Dentist in the placement of these implants. To find out more information on these software programs visit their web sites at:
Simplant Software:

*Dental scans are usually a self-pay test. They are considered a cosmetic procedure by the insurance companies and the expenses are not covered under most plans. Payments can be arranged at time of scheduling. |

Why should I have a dental scan?
The dentist will be able to obtain exact measurements, visualize the quality and quantity of bone, clearly see the alveolar nerves to avoid nerve damage and visualize the surgical site in three dimensions. The Dentist will also be able to assess any pre-existing conditions and choose the correct implant size and surface. |
|
What are the other benefits of dental scans?
Dental scans minimize unnecessary surgery and are educational tools that result in less surgical time during implants. A typical Panorex or apical x-ray views of the jaw offer limited information. CT will help eliminate distortion and allows increased predictability when planning implant cases. |
|
Why can't a regular x-ray work for dental implants?
A panorex x-ray has a distortion rate up to 7.5mm while apical x-rays do not have enough information on them and the thickness of the bone cannot be determined. This scan will help your dentist determine if you are a candidate for an implant and the best location for an implant. It can also show the contour of the jaw bone and exact location of the anatomical structures. |
